Upload an existing Minecraft world

Import a ZIP and avoid replacing the wrong world.

World upload imports one Java Edition world from a ZIP. It is not a Bedrock converter or a full-server restore. For a panel backup in tar.gz format, use Backups instead.

Step by step

  1. Back up the current server. Close the source world or stop its server before creating the ZIP so that all world files have finished saving.
  2. ZIP the complete world folder, including level.dat and its subfolders. level.dat may be at the archive root or inside one enclosing world folder. Do not upload only region files or several sibling worlds in one ZIP.
  3. Check free server storage against the unpacked size. The upload keeps an existing target world under a different name, so the old and new worlds must both fit. Separate backup space does not increase this allowance.
  4. Open World upload. The suggested destination name comes from level-name in server.properties, with world as the fallback. Keep it or choose your own folder name.
  5. Select the ZIP and review the stop and replacement confirmations. Confirm replacement only when the displayed target is the world you intend to replace; the previous folder will be renamed, not immediately deleted.
  6. If offered, decide whether to adopt an included resource pack. This option requires an eligible Pro Tools server.
  7. Wait for upload and extraction to finish. The panel sets level-name to the selected world name. Start the server if necessary, join and check spawn, builds and dimensions.
  8. Keep the renamed old world until everything has been checked. You can download it via FTP and then remove it in Files to recover space. Handle separately stored Nether, End or multiworld folders separately while the server is stopped.

Check the result

If a new empty world appears, check level-name, the destination folder and level.dat. An invalid archive often has no level.dat, several equally nested worlds, or is not actually a ZIP.

Important

Keep the original download. Downgrading world data can lose chunks or blocks; modded worlds need compatible mods. Separate Paper/Spigot dimension layouts may need conversion before moving to different server software.
