Set up Simple Voice Chat

Install proximity voice chat, assign its port and connect players with microphones.

Simple Voice Chat needs a server plugin or mod and a compatible client mod for every player who wants to speak. A server plugin alone does not add voice chat to an unmodified client.

Step by step

  1. Back up the server and choose the release for your Minecraft version and loader. Put the Paper/Spigot plugin in /server/plugins, or the matching Fabric/Forge/NeoForge mod in /server/mods. Use the plugin/mod browser if a compatible release is listed.
  2. Restart once to generate the settings, then stop before editing. For plugins, open /server/plugins/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties; for mods, open /server/config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties.
  3. Copy an unused Query / plugin port or additional port from Overview and set port to that number. The default 24454 is not automatically assigned to you. Do not reuse the port occupied by Geyser or enabled Minecraft Query.
  4. Set bind_address=* for the container listener. Leave voice_host empty initially; if clients are directed to the wrong endpoint, use the actual public IP and voice port from Overview there as IP:PORT. Do not use the public IP as bind_address.
  5. Save and restart. Each player installs the matching Simple Voice Chat client mod and opens its setup to select microphone, output device and push-to-talk or voice activation. Check operating-system microphone permissions as well.
  6. Join with two players and test speech nearby. With the required command permission, run /voicechat test PLAYERNAME in game, replacing PLAYERNAME with a connected player. In the panel console, enter voicechat test PLAYERNAME without a leading slash.

Check the result

If the test fails, use the port troubleshooting guide. If it succeeds but you hear nothing, check mute state, microphone, output device and distance. Players without the client mod cannot use voice chat.

Important

Voice traffic uses UDP, so an ordinary TCP port checker does not prove it works. Proxy networks require the additional official proxy setup, not just a plugin on the proxy.
